The Nun II Scares Up Box Office Success Despite Critics, Tops Weekend Earnings

Despite facing negative reviews, “The Nun II” emerged as the top-grossing film in its opening weekend at North American theaters, raking in an estimated $32.6 million. Directed by Michael Graves and starring Taissa Farmiga and Storm Reid, the sequel to the 2018 hit “The Nun” fell short of its predecessor’s debut ($53.8 million) but still had a solid start. The “Conjuring” universe, to which “The Nun” movies belong, has collectively earned $2.1 billion at the box office. The sequel also performed well internationally, adding $52.7 million from 69 markets, with Mexico leading at $8.9 million, boosting its global debut to $85.3 million.

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore, emphasized the revenue potential of horror franchises and the enduring appeal of the horror moviegoing experience.

“Equalizer 3,” starring Denzel Washington, slipped to second place in its second weekend, adding $12.1 million to its domestic total of $61.9 million and worldwide earnings of $107.7 million.

The third spot was secured by the long-awaited third installment of Nia Vardalos’s “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” earning an estimated $10 million. Female audiences made up the majority of viewers (71%), with 83% of them aged 25 or older.

The Indian revenge thriller “Jawan,” featuring Shah Rukh Khan, opened in fourth place with $6.2 million, released in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. Shah Rukh Khan, a Bollywood superstar, also starred in “Pathaan,” another successful box office hit this year with global earnings of $130 million.

“Barbie,” which will be available on demand starting Tuesday, slid to fifth place after eight successful weeks, accumulating $5.9 million in its domestic box office, bringing its total to $620.5 million.

Final box office figures are expected to be released on Monday.
