However, launching an impeachment inquiry could appease Republican allies of former President Donald Trump, who is the leading GOP candidate for the 2024 presidential election. The right-wing faction seeks to uncover links between President Biden and his son’s business dealings, despite the White House’s claims of no involvement.
McCarthy is under pressure from different factions within his party, including those advocating for reduced government spending and opposition to COVID-19 mandates and vaccines.
The House Freedom Caucus, representing the conservative wing of the party, insists on rolling back federal spending to 2022 levels and adding various other priorities to the legislation. Their influence allows them to block McCarthy from passing a Republican bill independently. Relying on Democratic votes, however, could pose loyalty issues for McCarthy.
Apart from government funding, Congress must address the White House’s request for an additional $40 billion for Ukraine, federal disaster relief, and border security. While the government shutdown is the immediate concern, the potential Biden impeachment inquiry is a more significant political risk for McCarthy. Although he has signaled its likelihood, no specific date has been set.
